A decorated New Jersey police detective, Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore) is diagnosed with cancer and wants to leave her hard earned pension to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Ellen Page) . However the county officials, Freeholders, conspire to prevent Laurel from doing this.
