In The Surfer, a man (portrayed by Cage) returns to his coastal hometown in Australia after many years of establishing a life in the U.S. Upon his return, he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a local gang of surfers who rigidly claim ownership over the secluded childhood beach. Feeling wounded, the protagonist, "The Surfer," decides to stay at the beach, initiating a war against the individuals ruling the bay. However, as the conflict intensifies, the stakes spiral dramatically out of control, pushing "The Surfer" to the brink of his sanity.
