Patty Jenkins Not 'Contractually Obligated' to Direct Wonder Woman Sequel

Yeah, so Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins might not be as ‘contractually obligated’ to direct the sequel as we first thought…

In what seemed like a positive slam dunk for a potential (read: happening) sequel, it now turns out, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that Jenkins was only contracted for the one film: “While star Gal Gadot has an option in place for Wonder Woman 2 as part of her overall deal to appear in several DC movies, Warner Bros. executives enlisted Jenkins for just one film, a decision that could end up costing the studio millions of dollars if Jenkins' reps drive a hard bargain for her to return.”

It's pay day for Jenkins! She’s worth every dollar! What’s more she might get a more expansive deal that would allow her to work with DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns on a script treatment for that movie and possibly others as well!

As THR goes on to explain, it seems Warner Execs weren’t prepared for Wonder Woman to be such a critical and financial success and had the movie tracking about $65 million domestic, solid but hardly a reason to begin planning a long-range strategy. However, the strategy for the DCEU seems more filmmaker based than ticking off a roster of superheroes who need movies. Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel still doesn’t have a direct sequel and those same execs were already moving on to the likes of Justice League Dark and Joss Whedon’s Batgirl.

Still, it’s a change of pace to the old Warners regime, which gave the greenlight to The Hangover 2 two months before the original was released…and we all know how well that turned out.
