Last One Out, Turn Off The Light; '2K Australia' Shuts Down

Unfortunate news as Australia's only AAA developer has shut its doors citing the cost of development in Australia as a primary rationale.

2K Australia was founded almost fifteen years ago in the country's capital city, Canberra, as 'Irrational Canberra', the company collaborated on all three BioShock titles, as well as 'Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!' and 'Tribes: Vengeance'.

Speaking to the Australian branch of Kotaku, the company delivered its final words:

“We can confirm we have taken steps to begin the studio closure process for 2K Australia in order to better manage ongoing development costs while improving the working proximity of our creative teams. We are very grateful for the team’s valuable contributions to numerous 2K projects, and are working with affected staff to explore reassignment opportunities where possible.”

According to unnamed sources, the company had planned a move to Melbourne, Victoria in hopes of attracting fresh talent but the plan backfired and as such, the company lost staff instead. This damage apparently spurred on the decision to close down.

While Australia has lost its last AAA developer, an indie scene still thrives. We wish the best of luck to all affected, and good luck with future projects.
