The Oscars 2016 Nominations are In - The Revenant Leads The Way

The Oscar nominations are in for the 88th annual Academy Awards, and as expected, The Revenant has emerged as a frontrunner with 12 nominations – with Mad Max: Fury Road roaring up behind it with 10 nominations – a remarkable achievement for an action movie.

Ridley Scott’s marooned space flick The Martian was next with seven nods; Spotlight, Bridge of Spies, and Carol all earned six.

The Best Picture category, which, under current rules can be anywhere from five to ten nominees depending on how the voting splits, has eight this year, and, once again, Mad Max: Fury Road will be tussling it out with prestige pictures like Brooklyn and Bridge of Spies.

There weren’t any surprises in the Best Actor category with Leonardo DiCaprio, first nominated over two decades ago for 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, picking up his sixth Oscar nomination, and will be the frontrunner to finally take home an Oscar for his exhausting work in The Revenant.

In the Best Actress category, Brie Larson looks the frontrunner thanks to her Golden Globe winning turn in Room. She faces some stiff competition from perennial Oscar favourites like Jennifer Lawrence for Joy and two-time winner Cate Blanchett for Carol.
