Denis Villeneuve Confirmed as Director of Dune Remake

It’s official: Denis Villeneuve – the director of Sicario and the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 – will direct a remake of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Back in November, Legendary Entertainment snapped up the rights to Dune, Frank Herbert's sprawling, complex series of science-fiction novels and now, progress is being made with Villeneuve’s appointment confirmed by Frank’s son, Brian Herbert via twitter.

He tweeted that Legendary: "has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new DUNE series film project". Intriguingly, the tweet suggests a franchise is planned rather than a single film – an ambitious scheme for the sprawling material.

Cinematic history is littered with fallen Dune adaptations. Such notable names who’ve attempted to bring the beloved sci-fi classic to the screen include Alejandro Jodorosky who tried and failed to produce it (with some insane names attached – Orson Welles! Mick Jagger! Salvador Dali!), David Lynch, who’s effort did make it to the big screen before being disowned by the harangued director, and Taken director Pierre Morel whose recent attempt quickly succumbed to the mind-killer that is development hell.
