Reuniting with Les Misérables director Tom Hooper for historic transgender drama, The Danish Girl, Eddie Redmayne takes the lead as pioneer Einar Wegener, with Alicia Vikander in close support as his wife Gerda.

The most striking thing is Redmayne’s transformation, in this, the global trailer. Playing Wegener, a Danish-born artist who was one of the first known people to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Born male, she underwent a series of experimental surgeries in Germany, beginning in 1930 and changed her name to Lili Elbe. The initially enthusiastic Gerda, then becomes to feel marginalised by his increasing dalliances with Ben Whishaw’s suitor Henrik.

Written by Lucinda Coxon (The Crimson Petal And The White), Amber Heard, Sebastian Koch and Matthias Schoenaerts round out The Danish Girl’s cast. It lands in UK cinemas on January 1.
