John Hollar, a struggling NYC artist is forced to navigate the small middle-American town he left behind when news of his mother's illness brings him home. Back in the house he grew up in, John is immediately swept up in the problems of his dysfunctional family, high school rival, and an over-eager ex-girlfriend as he faces impending fatherhood with his girlfriend in New York. From a script by Jim Strouse that is at turns hilarious and heartbreaking, John Krasiniski's second feature is a poignant look at the bonds of family and friendship.

The Hollars works as a whole. Becca and John’s relationship feels like an accurate rendering of a young 30s couple struggling with that final step into commitment and parenthood...

In many ways, John Krasinski’s second directorial effort is your standard Sundance fare.

John Kraskinski directs and stars in this name-heavy story about a family dealing with a terminally ill mother.

John Krasinski’s The Hollars drowns out its best details with acoustic droning.

Crowded, cornball and too busy for its short running time, The Hollars nevertheless generates a few moments of grace and reflection.

The film's ruefully honest tone is periodically drowned out by the blare of stagey coincidences.
