Wandering the wilderness, looking for a studio to call home, Lone Wolf and Cub has been in development for some time. Recently, Justin Lin was announced as producer and now he’s found his writer in the form of Seven scribe Andrew Kevin Walker.

Paramount has been interested in the serial martial arts game since 2003 and has hired Lin to shepherd the latest incarnation of Koike Kazuo and Goseki Kojima 1970s manga to the big screen. Their original manga series was praised for its storytelling and historical accuracy, as it followed a shogun's executioner named Itto Ogami, who us out for revenge after his wife and the rest of his house bar his infant son is murdered. As the years pass, he trains the boy to become a fierce warrior and the pair travels the country as assassins for hire, while also hunting the people who killed their family.

Lone Wolf and Cub was also adapted as a series of hyper-violent, splattery films during the 70s, which became landmarks in genre and exploitation cinema. There’s no word yet on who will direct this incarnation – at one point Darren Aronofsky was rumoured to be helming the film – but it’s good to know that the pushcart is finally rolling on this one.
