Given the last time we saw the character on screen, he was played by the late, great John Hurt. So it’s going to take someone of real stature to make the role of Professor Trevor Bloom their own. Step forward Ian McShane who has just signed on to play our hero’s adoptive father figure in Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen.

McShane, who was last seen as Mr. Wednesday in American Gods, will certainly bring a different vibe to the role of Hellboy’s discoverer and eventual father figure.

Speaking of other changes, Rise Of The Blood Queen features new people behind and in front of the camera, with Neil Marshall directing, Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and character creator Mike Mignola on script duty, and Stranger Things' David Harbour playing the title role in a movie that sees Big Red going up against a medieval sorceress who has plans to destroy the world.

Production on Hellboy: Rise of The Blood Queen is due to begin in September.
