Nintendo have announced a new handheld called the New Nintendo 2DS XL. It nestles itself between the Nintendo 2DS and 3DS models in pricing and features.

The new 2DS XL uses the same screen size of the 3DS but of course visuals are limited to 2D. It's a lighter handheld system but matches the power of the new 3DS XL, has built-in NFC support for amiibo cards and figures. It can play 3DS titles, the newer 3DS games and DS all in 2D.

“This new addition to Nintendo’s portable hardware line demonstrates our commitment to the hand-held market,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “New Nintendo 2DS XL sports a beautiful clamshell design and offers a great balance between price and performance.”

Two new games launch the same day as the Nintendo 2DS XL and they are Hey! Pikmin and Miitopia.

New Nintendo 2DS XL releases July 28th, 2017 in the US with a suggested retail price of $149.99.
