Top US Releases in Cinemas This October

October is upon us and, as award season starts to gear into life, a whole slew of top movie releases hit US cinemas; amongst which will see a return to the world of espionage for Steven Spielberg, a stranded Matt Damon, a precarious stroll with Joseph Gordon Levitt and a look at the moments that shaped the genius of the late, great Steve Jobs.

Coming October 2, The Martian sees Matt Damon, play astronaut Mark Watney, who, after a fierce storm on the surface of Mars, is presumed dead. Stranded on the red planet with only meagre supplies to keep him from the hostile environment around him, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Released the same day, Emily Blunt’s idealistic FBI agent finds herself thrust into the escalating war on drugs at the border between the US and Mexico in the brutal and bloody, Sicario.

Stepping out in style, the vertigo-inducing The Walk strolls into cinemas October 9. The film, directed by Robert Zemeckis, tells story of French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's (Joseph Gordon Levitt) attempt to cross the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. Based on the Oscar winning documentary, Man on Wire, the film has a lot to live up to but the stunning imagery, guaranteed to Imax screenings a nerve shredding experience.

Also released on October 9 is Pan, the live-action retelling of the story of Peter Pan and Neverland – serving as an origin story for Peter, the film tells the tale of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny -- to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan. Staring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, the movie boasts some impressive visuals by Atonement director Joe Wright.

On October 16, get ready to feel a chill down your spine as master of horror Guillermo Del Toro unleashes Crimson Peak – where an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds...and remembers.

Featuring some literally drop dead gorgeous visuals and a stellar cast, including Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, this one looks a feast of terrors for horror fans.

Speaking of horror, how about a shot of nostalgia with your scares as Goosebumps unleashes the imagination on of young adult horror author R.L Stine upon cinema-goers in this ghost house tale staring Jack Black, Amy Ryan and Ken Marino.

After making arguable one of his most assured movies in his prestigious career in Munich – Steven Spielberg returns to the world of espionage with Cold War drama, Bridge of Spies. Boasting a script from the Coen Brothers and some outstanding performances from Tom Hanks and Alan Alda; the film has already wowed us with two visually stunning, tense trailers.

Released October 23 is Danny Boyle’s attempt to make tangible the genius of Steve Jobs in the Aaron Sorkin scripted drama of the same name. Starring Michael Fassbender as the visionary Apple CEO, the film attempts to capture every facet of Jobs by taking a look behind the curtain at three of the most important product launches of his and Apple’s venture together.

It’s time to say goodbye to timecodes, shifting furniture and sleepless nights as the Paranormal Activity franchise draws to a close with The Ghost Dimension. Get ready to see a whole new family tormented by supernatural occurrences just in time for Halloween.

Also released, Vin Diesel swaps cars and mumbling for witches and mumbling in The Last Witch Hunter – a lone figure who is all that stands between humanity and the combined forces of the most horrifying witches in history…well after all the other witch hunters died. Staring alongside Diesel are Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie and Michael Caine.

And finally, October 30 brings us Our Brand is Crisis – another October release based on a documentary – which sees Sandra Bullock star as a campaign strategist who must go head to head with her professional rival as they bring American style political campaign strategies to South America.

The film also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Zoe Kazan, and Anthony Mackie.

Also released today, get ready to explore the wilderness with just your compass, a map and several hundred undead, flesh hungry zombies in Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Watch as three scouts, on the eve of their last camp-out, discover the true meaning of friendship when they attempt to save their town from a zombie outbreak. The film stars Patrick Schwarzenegger, Halston Sage and Tye Sheridan.
