Defying logic and bringing a unique take on the post-apocalyptic genre, Into the Badlands, the insane blend of martial arts and Mad Max, is getting a world-building second series.

Expanding its scope, the second series will dive headlong into where season 1 left off, catching up with Daniel Wu’s Sunny, as well as M.K. (Aramis Knight), The Widow (Emily Beecham), and Martin Csokas’s Quinn. It also means introducing at least one new major character in Bajie, played by none other than Nick Frost, who is being teased as a potential sidekick to Sunny.

The second season, which aired on Sunday, builds upon the feudalism via combat, is according to Wu, is where the real story of the Badlands begins.

“It was six episodes for people to understand the world and the tone and the characters. There was a lot for people to understand,” he said. “This season, with the move and with more episodes has allowed us to really expand the show and make it more of a journey show, which was always our intention. It was never supposed to be a ‘stuck on a plantation’ show. But you need to understand the world and that’s why at the end of Season 1, we sent Sunny in one direction and M.K. in the other direction and left the Badlands in kind of a mess.”

Bringing its Hong Kong style to AMC, Into the Badlands continues this Sunday.
