Colin Trevorrow No Longer Directing Star Wars: Episode IX
Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow is out as Star Wars: Episode IX director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Trevorrow’s departure has been mooted from June weeks before the opening of The Book of Henry, his thriller that was panned by critics and failed at the box office.
The Reporter’s sources have said that script problems have continued to dog the project with Trevorrow having had repeated stabs at multiple drafts. In August, Jack Thorne, the British scribe who wrote the upcoming Julia Roberts-Jacob Tremblay movie Wonder was tapped to work on the script.
Lucasfilm and Disney announced the exit Tuesday in a statement: "Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”
Sources also say that the relationship between Trevorrow and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy had become unmanageable.
Kennedy, who had already been involved in one director firing and hiring when she replaced Chris Lord and Phil Miller on the Han Solo spin-off movie with Ron Howard, which Howard is currently finishing production now in London, didn’t want to go through a similar situation further down the line.
Star Wars: Episode IX is due for release May 24, 2019.
