Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi in Talks to Direct Akira Adaptation

Seminal manga Akira is something of a great white whale to Hollywood – it’s been submerged in development hell for decades now passing from writers and directors who have all failed to bring its techno-horror to the big screen. 

Over the years the project has attracted the likes of Akira has attracted the likes of Steve Kloves, Keanu Reeves, Albert Hughes, Jaume Collet-Serra, Dane DeHaan, Michael Pitt and Ruairi Robinson. Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way company remains attached to produce, and now we start waiting again to see if it actual ly happens this time.

The latest name to attempt the impossible is Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, with whom Warner Bros. have begun preliminary negotiations.  

He may seem like an odd choice for what is a dark movie but then again, he was an odd choice for Thor too and that seems to have turned out more than fine. For those not in the know, Akira focuses on the tale of Tetsuo, whose government experiment-boosted psychic powers threaten everything, and best pal Kaneda, the biker who must find a way to help him. 

According to Deadline, the plan is to adapt the first three of six graphic novels by Katsuhiro Otomo into two separate movies.
