Kong Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts Talks 'Punk Rock' Metal Gear Solid Movie

Fans of REX-like bipedal tanks and punctuation rejoice, as Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has briefly described the script for his highly-anticipated Metal Gear Solid movie.

The filmmaker had initially signed up to direct an adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s iconic Metal Gear video game series back in 2014, but the project staled and Vogt-Roberts went on to direct Kong: Skull Island – which, thanks to its strong showing at the box office, has given him the clout to get Sony Pictures interested in the project once again.

A Kojima fan boy, Vogt-Roberts gave Den of Geek a status update of the script which he’s working on with screenwriter Jay Basu.

“Right now what we’re trying to write is the craziest, punk rock, Kojima, rock and roll, like ‘holy sh*t they’re going to try to make that movie that does this in that many time periods?!’ Like it’s special. Whether we can execute on that script, whether we can get it made, who knows. But right now, I truly believe that the target is in the right direction, and so we’ll see what happens from there.”

It's no secret that Hollywood has struggled with video game adaptations and it’s something that Vogt-Roberts won’t be preoccupied with. Furthermore, he recently said that he’s not diving into the story with preconceived ideas for the film’s rating and budget. He wants to write the most accurate and faithful story possible first, and worry about the film’s rating and budgetary concerns second.

It’s a pragmatic approach and hopefully one that will not only produce our first genuinely great video game adaptation but also a film worthy of the Metal Gear franchise.
