Westworld Season 2 Will 'F**k With The Metaphysical'

Westworld was the TV event of 2016 – an intriguing mixture of morals and corrals (as in the O.K Corral, you know, like a western…oh forget it) – and now producers currently brainstorming its second series have promised it will "F**k with the Metaphysical”.

Speaking to IGN at the PaleyFest, showrunner Jonathan Nolan said of the second season “There will be a story, and it will f**k with the metaphysical at some point”.

Before getting Metaf**ksical, there’s the small matter of writing the scripts for the second season which showrunner Jonathan Nolan has said, unlike the first series, will not film until all the episodes are written.

"It was a real lesson for us in the first season," Nolan said about writing scripts before shooting. "When they say it's not TV, it's HBO, they're not kidding. It's a 10-hour movie we're making here. We're writing right now. We're terribly excited about what we're writing."

Then there’s the small matter of resolving and expanding upon the themes and twists of the first series. Be warned, the rest of this article contains spoilers for Season 1. At the end of Season 1, it was suggested that Westworld was just one of the places that guests could visit, with another being Samurai World.

Asked if there are indeed other worlds in the show's universe, showrunner Jonathan Nolan said with a chuckle, "That would be cool, wouldn't it?"

Also during the PaleyFest panel, Nolan confirmed that the character Maeve (Thandie Newton) was acting on her own free will when she decided to abandon her escape plans to instead stay in Westworld to find her daughter. Some believed that this was all part of her programming, but apparently it's not.

"If you look at her performance in that moment, that is really the first decision she's ever made. For me, it's a very emotional moment in the episode because you see her freewill," Nolan said.

Westworld Season 2 is rumoured to be airing next year.
