Peter Jackson has revealed concept art for the upcoming adaptation of Philip Reeve’s Mortal Engines, which he’ll be producing along with wife and long-time collaborator Fran Walsh.

The posted artwork includes one of the roaming cities which form the heart of the quartet of novels that make up the Mortal Engines saga which takes place in the distant future where mobile cities scour the earth for smaller towns to dismantle and strip for parts.

While there was no other information forthcoming about the imagery, the red scarf donned by the foregrounded character seems to indicate the prescience of young Outlander woman named Hester Shaw, who arrives in Traction City and changes the life of the protagonist, Tom Natsworthy. The cast includes Hugo Weaving, Stephen Lang, Hera Hilmar, and Robert Sheehan – with director duties falling to Christian Rivers, who told the Mortal Engines site:

“A fantastical, futuristic world that has to be seen to be believed. At its heart though, it’s a beautiful love story and a richly complex character driven adventure. To be the director who gets to bring Philip Reeve’s incredible universe to life is a dream come true.”

Mortal Engines is scheduled for release on Dec. 14, 2018.
