Atari are going back into the console hardware business with the Ataribox, which is their version of Nintendo's NES and SNES mini systems. Details remain scarce.

The Ataribox will be powered by PC technology, according to reports. This means it won't be dusting off the old circuit boards from Atari's early days but instead work to bridge the gap and emulate on PC hardware. This is to support both retro Atari games as well as "current content".

"We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing," stated Atari, who have yet to reveal technical specifications for the Ataribox. "We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so."

The Ataribox, as revealed through the released photos, features 2x HDMI ports, 4x USB ports and SD card support. It will also come in at least three flavours with varying aesthetic design including a wood-finished version. Atari are yet to offer anything about specifications, software features, pricing or a release schedule.

An official Ataribox website is online but only offers a newsletter subscription for more information as it becomes available.
