Dope Director Rick Famuyiwa Joins The Flash
Just when it seemed like the big screen version of The Flash was racing ahead with characteristic speed, along came a very big road block in the form of director Seth Grahame-Smith’s departure. But, just as quickly, a new man has picked up the baton; Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa is taking the job.
Famuyiwa will inherit Grahame-Smith’s script – although he’ll probably bring his own touch to the material as production movies apace - Ezra Miller, who was introduced as the speedster in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, is set to reprise the role in the first Justice League movie, which is now shooting .
The move is very much from the Marvel playbook – Famuyiwa is an indie director who brings a lot of heart and soul to his material which is very much in the same mode as the Russo Brothers or even Taika Waititi – so perhaps his hiring hints at a change of direction for the film following the critical mauling dished out to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. It makes you wonder just what Warner Bros. and Grahame-Smith disagreed on after he exited the film citing ‘creative differences’.
It is a big opportunity for Famuyiwa, whose résumé so far has been small distinctive indies like The Wood, Brown Sugar, and Our Family Wedding. Famuiywa is receiving strong Emmy-season buzz for directing Confirmation, the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas HBO drama that stars Kerry Washington and Wendell Pierce as the two principal characters.
The Flash's stand-alone adventure is currently scheduled to appear in 2018.
