Ninja Theory's new third-person action game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice won't be releasing this year, which shouldn't surprise anyone by now.

Instead the Celtic mythology theme game will be arriving in 2017. The independent developer explores the personal journey of Senua as she battles through a truly hellish underworld full psychotic manifestations of her own mind.

While Ninja Theory is aiming for triple-A quality it's only being worked on by 15 staff.

"Our progress on Hellblade has not been as fast as we would have liked," admitted the studio. "One of the reasons we're creating Hellblade independently is because it puts decisions in our hands. Rushing the game out for release or compromising on quality is not something we are willing to entertain."

Ninja Theory has brought us such things as the excellent Heavenly Sword (2007), Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010) and DmC: Devil May Cry (2013).

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice releases on PC and PlayStation 4 in 2017.
