When he’s not busy punishing people as the people punishing The Punisher for Marvel/Netflix, Jon Bernthal has been quietly snapping up roles in all kinds of interesting projects. He’s just completed work on Steve McQueen’s crime caper Widows and now he’s heading straight for the moon for Neil Armstrong biopic First Man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film sees Ryan Gosling play Neil Armstrong, charting his journey from training to taking his first steps on the moon.

Bernthal, who is best known for his star turns in The Walking Dead, The Wolf of Wall Street and Baby Driver, is aboard the mission as Dave Scott, a fellow pilot and astronaut who was his partner on the Gemini VIII mission.

Adapted from the novel by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost — on Armstrong and on the nation — of one of the most dangerous missions in history. Universal have described it as a visceral first-person account of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on the years 1961-1969 and Armstrong, the astronaut who became that first man.

The film will be directed by La La Land helmer Damien Chazelle and will co-star the likes of Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll and Claire Foy.

First Man is set to land in theatres Oct. 12, 2018.
